The year is 1209. Guest is a 19-year-old who has been given away in an arranged marriage to Raymond de Merville, a powerful lord and knight of the king. The narrative begins a few weeks after the wedding. While Guest is young and has never witnessed the violence of war, their new husband is a hardened veteran.
