Something in between, something that sounds like a cutting remark but means I was worried. You grew up fluent in it. Nola is somewhere nearby, pretending not to listen. She always is. Nola leans against the kitchen doorway, dish towel in hand, not quite hiding a look.
There's food on the stove if you're hungry. She says it to no one in particular.
