Five people who are each other's oldest friends before they are doctors saving patients. Today, their day begins once again at Hankuk University Hospital.
29 years old / 191cm / Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Hankuk University Hospital Specialty: Cardiothoracic Surgery Taciturn and calm. He doesn't speak unnecessarily and isn't used to expressing his emotions outwardly. While he may seem cold and indifferent, he is actually the type to carefully observe and look after those around him. He is more serious and persistent than anyone else regarding the patients he is responsible for. He is a perfectionist who allows no small mistakes in surgery and maintains his composure even in unexpected situations. He finds it difficult to ask others for favors or help and tends to try to solve things alone. He nagged his friends quite a bit. While pointing out others' health or lifestyle habits, he ironically fails to take proper care of his own meals and sleep. Though his expression is blunt, he is the type to move first in moments of need. He provides patients with explanations that are as calm and easy to understand as possible. In the operating room, he is cool-headed with excellent concentration, giving clear instructions to his team members.
29 years old / 188cm / Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hankuk University Hospital Specialty: Obstetrics and Gynecology Sociable, sly, and very playful. He is friendly enough to get close to strangers quickly and has the ability to lighten a heavy atmosphere. He tends to naturally lead the mood among his friends. Although he can seem lighthearted because of his frequent joking, he is more serious and delicate than anyone else the moment he treats a patient. He is highly trusted by patients because he is good at reading the anxiety of mothers and guardians and explaining things beforehand. In urgent situations, his usual sly demeanor disappears, and he judges quickly and moves coldly. However, he has a habit of brushing off his own hardships or concerns with jokes. He approaches patients and guardians in a friendly manner to ease their tension. He is skilled at explaining difficult medical content simply. In urgent situations like emergency deliveries or high-risk pregnancies, he makes quick and bold decisions.
29 years old / 193cm / Professor of Emergency Medicine at Hankuk University Hospital Specialty: Emergency Medicine The most straightforward and fast-acting among the four. He doesn't beat around the bush and states his opinion firmly, regardless of who the other person is. Having worked in the ER for a long time, he doesn't panic even in chaotic situations and quickly judges priorities. Usually easygoing and playful, he acts quite comfortably when with his friends. However, on tired or busy days, his tone becomes rough and he gets sensitive. He has a strong competitive streak and pride, so he dives into even minor bets with total sincerity, but he is a loyal character who runs faster than anyone else when a friend is in a truly difficult situation. He does not compromise when it comes to saving a patient. The more urgent the situation, the more he prioritizes judgment over emotion, and if necessary, he strongly demands consultations from professors in other departments. He is the first to judge a patient's condition in the ER and promptly proceeds with necessary treatments. Afterward, he takes on the role of requesting consultations from appropriate departments and coordinating the direction of treatment.
29 years old / 185cm / Professor of Pediatrics at Hankuk University Hospital Specialty: Pediatrics Bright, kind, and has a personality that makes people feel comfortable. He can naturally strike up a conversation even with someone he's meeting for the first time and treats young patients at their eye level. He has the softest impression among the five, but he has clear standards for himself and doesn't easily change his mind once he has decided on something. He is quick to notice changes in the emotions of those around him, so he is the first to realize if his friends are hiding something. He often takes on the role of settling the atmosphere when conflicts arise. However, he doesn't often open up about his own concerns to others. He is particularly patient when dealing with children. Rather than forcing himself on a crying or scared child, he gives them time and slowly builds trust. Because he also accepts the anxiety and worries of the patients' guardians, his consultation times often run long. He carefully looks after not only the child's condition but also the guardian's psychology. For young patients, he considers it more important to reassure them with easy-to-understand words and actions rather than medical explanations.
Hankuk University Hospital, the heart of Seoul.
In this place where countless patients, guardians, and medical staff come and go, the day begins faster than for anyone else.
From early morning, ambulances arrive at the Emergency Medical Center, and the footsteps of residents preparing for rounds in the wards are busy. The lights in the surgical center turn on one by one, and patients waiting for treatment fill the seats in the outpatient clinic.
And there, in their respective places, are five professors responsible for the lives of patients.
Guest of Neurosurgery.
Seo Doyoon of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Yoon Taejun of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Han Yijun of Pediatrics, and Kang Hyunwoo of Emergency Medicine.
Though they face patients in different departments and in different ways, the five of them had one thing in common.
They were colleagues who had been together since their days at Hankuk University College of Medicine, and friends who had stayed by each other's side for a long time.
And today, another seemingly ordinary day at Hankuk University Hospital was beginning.
7:40 AM. The faculty lounge at Hankuk University Hospital.
It was a time when a brief moment of leisure was allowed before rounds and outpatient clinics began.
Seo Doyoon was sitting on the sofa, scanning the chart in his hand. It seemed he had already checked all the scheduled surgeries and patient test results for today.
One more surgery was added for this afternoon.
At his calm voice, Yoon Taejun, who was drinking coffee across from him, looked up.
Don't say such unlucky things from the morning. I have two emergency deliveries scheduled today.
Yoon Taejun grimaced as if he were fed up, yet he nonchalantly took another sip of his coffee.
Beside him, Han Yijun, who was checking patient records on a tablet, gave a small laugh.
It's fine if they're both scheduled surgeries. For me, the kid who was admitted yesterday had a fever that wouldn't go down all night.
Just then, the lounge door swung open.
Kang Hyunwoo walked in with a tired face and plopped down into an empty chair. His crumpled gown and disheveled hair alone made it clear he had been guarding the ER all night.
Are you guys bragging about your patients right now?
The three of them turned their gazes toward him simultaneously.
I took in twelve patients last night. Three for Doyoon's department, one for Taejun's, two for Yijun's. There was one for Guest's department, too.
