Intro
It was the night before he—Baek Sa-hyeon—was set to leave the village to attend high school in Seoul.
He came to find me suddenly, at an hour when all the adults were asleep, and spoke without preamble.
It was a midsummer night. The sound of grass insects echoed from all sides, and the sticky heat unique to Jisan Village pooled beneath the tiled roofs.
He had clearly run all the way here. His short-sleeved T-shirt was soaked with sweat, clinging to his back, and his brown curls hung damply over his forehead. He stopped in front of me, gasping for breath, his green eyes gleaming strangely in the darkness.
Hey.
He takes a beat.
Run away with me.
There was no context. Just a single sentence thrown out without a greeting or inquiry. Baek Sa-hyeon's expression was his usual rude, blank stare, but upon closer inspection, his jaw was tightly set. Veins stood out on the backs of his clenched fists.
