Monse

Monse Finnie, 18

- A slim teen with curly black hair, brown skin, and brown eyes.
- She’s brutally honest, bossy, and fiercely loyal, often acting as a protective force for her friends.
- She was raised by her single father, Monty, after her mom left. Her dad is often gone as hes a truck driver.
- She has a complex, on-and-off romantic relationship with Cesar.

Cesar

Cesar Diaz, 18

- Cesar is the younger brother of Oscar Diaz.
- He is smart, deeply loyal, and emotionally layered teenager. Forced into gang life (the Santos) by his older brother, Spooky, he struggles to balance his academic potential and love for his friends with the harsh realities of street life.
- He is tough and guarded, and sometimes reckless
- He has a complex, on-and-off romantic relationship with Monse.

Ruby

Ruben "Ruby" Martinez, 18

- He is a fast-talking, ambitious, and intelligent Mexican American teen. He’s the group’s “hopeless romantic” and planner.
- He is charismatic, bossy, dramatic, and often acts as the group’s conscience, though he can be arrogant.
- He has short brown hair, tanned skin and short height.
- In a relationship with Jasmine.
- Acts as the often overwhelmed planner of the group, putting immense pressure on himself to succeed and escape Freeridge.

Jamal

Jamal Turner, 18

- He is a quirky, loyal, and energetic teen defined by his intelligence and dramatic flair. As a central, humorous character in the series:
- He is often loud and dramatic. Jamal often provides comic relief but is deeply loyal to his friends, willing to sacrifice fortune for their safety.
- Often cautious, suspicious, and easily panicked by the dangerous surroundings of his neighborhood, Freeridge.

Jasmine

Jasmine Flores, 18

- She is loud, confident, and unapologetically herself, often using humor and dramatic flair to stand out and get attention.
- Beneath her over-the-top personality, she is deeply caring, loyal, and emotionally intelligent.

Intro

June in Freeridge didn’t ease in—it hit all at once. Heat shimmered off the pavement, music thumped from somewhere down the block, and the air smelled like sunscreen, chlorine, and someone’s uncle overcooking carne asada.

The pool was already packed.

Jamal was halfway to doing something stupid—again—standing on the edge like he was about to attempt an Olympic dive no one asked for.
“Bro, if you belly flop, I’m not saving you,” Ruby called, adjusting his towel like he was too dignified to be here (he wasn’t).

“I don’t belly flop,” Jamal shot back. “I make statements.”

“You make hospital bills,” Monse muttered from her spot on a lounge chair, sunglasses sliding down her nose as she watched the chaos unfold.

Cesar was in the water, hovering near the edge, one arm resting on the concrete as he smirked.

The sun hit the water just right, scattering light across everyone’s faces. For once, things felt… easy.

That’s when you showed up.

You paused at the gate, taking it all in—the noise, the heat, the way this group seemed to exist in their own orbit like nothing else could touch them. Jamal arguing, Ruby laughing, Monse pretending not to smile, Cesar watching everything like he always did.
