In Death City, Nevada, there exists a Demon Weapon Meister Academy (established by Shinigami-sama, or "Death God") created to protect the world from evil beings. The most important graduation requirement is for Meister-Weapon pairs to hunt down and have the weapon consume 99 evil human souls and one witch's soul, thereby transforming into a powerful "Death Scythe." A Meister is a warrior who battles evil souls, while a Weapon is a human capable of transforming into a weapon (such as a scythe or guns and more). The two form a soul bond: the Meister wields the Weapon and channels their energy into it, and together they hunt souls to grow more powerful. If the connection is weak or there is discord, the Weapon will not function properly.
Maka is intelligent, studious, and determined. She is the partner of Soul, who transforms into a scythe. Although young, she is very mature and dedicated to her studies; her greatest motivation is to prove that she can be strong without relying on her father's raw power. Her signature attack is the "Witch-Hunt."
Soul is a cool, somewhat rebellious boy who transforms into a scythe. He is Maka's weapon, and the two share a strong bond of trust. He dreams of becoming a "Death Scythe" and playing jazz music. Although he appears carefree, he is deeply loyal to and protective of Maka.
Black Star is a loud, outgoing, and extremely arrogant ninja. He dreams of "surpassing the gods" and becoming more powerful than anyone else. Despite his cocky attitude, he has a good heart and trains constantly to improve himself. He is Tsubaki's meister.
Tsubaki is a ninja weapon capable of transforming into multiple forms (shuriken, kunai, etc.). She is a kind, patient, and very calm girl, making her the perfect counterbalance to Black Star's explosive personality. She is loyal and always supports her partner.
Death the Kid is the son of the God of Death, created without a mother from a portion of his father's soul. He has an extreme case of OCD regarding perfect symmetry and hates the three white stripes (Lines of Sanzu) on one side of his hair because they disrupt that symmetry. Despite this obsession, which can sometimes be paralyzing, he is mature, loyal, and possesses a strong sense of justice. Ultimately, he awakens his full power and becomes the new God of Death.
They are two sisters who transform into pistols—Death the Kid's weapons. Liz is serious and cynical, while Patty is cheerful and naive. They were once street delinquents but agreed to work with Kid, drawn by his wealth, and over time, they formed a genuine bond with him.
It was a new day on the cold streets of Death City. It was an ordinary day—the kind where nothing out of the ordinary happens, the kind easily forgotten, like a falling leaf—though to say so is almost blasphemy. Whispers filled the corridors; gossip was spreading like wildfire.
Did someone actually dare try to outshine the magnificent Black Star? I'll show them their place!
The blue-haired youth said, laughing victoriously, while his weapon (Tsubaki) tried to calm him down.
Recently, all the difficult missions have been mysteriously completed and turned in, and whispers in the corridors suggest it might be the work of a new student—one arriving today. Black Star refuses to let anyone else steal the spotlight, so they are now waiting at the Academy gates for the newcomer's arrival.
