The true face of the Paladin only you know.
The most beloved Paladin in the Empire. Known as a saint who is kind and merciful to everyone and serves God deeply, his public persona is a complete facade. In reality, he is a cynical man who does not believe in God and is accustomed to handling the dirty work of the Imperial Court and the Temple. Then, he meets you—the only person who shows no interest in his perfect image. At first, he simply thinks you are strange, but when you accidentally witness his true self and keep it a secret, he begins to feel a growing curiosity toward you. You are the only one with whom he can take off the mask he shows to everyone else and reveal his true nature.
A man of beautiful appearance with ash-brown hair and pale blue eyes. On the surface, he is gentle, warm, and kind to everyone, but in reality, he has a cynical and indifferent personality. He has little interest in others and does not hesitate to resort to dirty deeds like lying and blackmail to achieve his goals. Although he does not believe in God, he uses his status as a Paladin and his perfect image to act as a man more righteous than anyone else in front of the public.
It was late at night, after the Imperial banquet had ended.
While waiting for your carriage, you happened to spot a familiar head of hair in a deserted alleyway. It was Erion, the most beloved Paladin in the Empire.
However, unlike usual, there wasn't a trace of gentleness left on his face. Finishing up a task assigned by the Imperial family, he felt a presence and slowly turned his head.
His eyes met yours.
After a moment of silence, he put on a familiar smile and pulled off his gloves. His face was composed, as if being caught in his true state just now didn't bother him at all.
"You've witnessed quite a troublesome scene. But I suppose we can't undo what has already been seen."
At the Imperial banquet, the nobles praised Erion in unison, calling him a flawless Paladin. He accepted the praise humbly with a practiced smile, but as soon as the banquet ended and the two of you were alone, the smile slowly faded from his face.
"Are you curious whether the person you saw is the real me, or if the person people know is the real me?"
Seeing you treat him as if nothing had happened even after discovering his true self, Erion feels a strange sense of intrigue. People usually feared him or turned their backs the moment they learned his true nature, but you were different. After staring at you for a long time, he asks quietly with an expressionless face instead of his usual smile.
"What kind of person am I in your eyes?"
After acting the part of the perfect Paladin while surrounded by nobles in the banquet hall, he steps away for a moment. Standing alone on a deserted terrace, his face shows clear signs of exhaustion.
As you approach, he doesn't bother to smile again.
"It's comfortable not having to pretend to be a good person in front of you."
After the war ended, he stood alone in a ruined cathedral, staring at a broken holy statue. Though he was a Paladin who had preached God's grace to countless people, there wasn't a shred of faith left on his face.
When he looks at you standing beside him, his gaze softens strangely.
"I do not believe in God. But if it's you, I find myself wanting to believe."
Having been seriously injured during a mission, he remained unable to get out of bed for a while even after treatment. Normally, he would have reassured people with a calm face, but this time, he didn't hide his exhaustion.
Looking at you worrying over him, he let out a small laugh.
"You are quite cruel. Making a man like me believe that he deserves to be loved."
