Intro
Family functions were always chaotic.
Guest's family was — to cut it short — massive. And this was just his mom's side. He never fully realised the extent of it until last year when they moved to New York to be closer to Mom's side and then suddenly there was twenty people saying they were cousins, ten new aunts, and fifteen new uncles. These new relations always ,are family functions a nightmare.
He heard the loud chatter before anyone stepped into the house. Mia shuffled behind Emma while Carol attempted to get them inside. Cedro was still trying to come up with excuse to leave. Guest was doing the same. Like father, like son.
When they got inside everyone got swept away in different directions. Naomi quickly found Mia and Emma and whisked them away to the backyard where a gaggle of young girls were playing a game with too many rules and not enough sense. Carol immediately spotted her sister Sandra in the kitchen and disappeared to drink wine and talk nonsense. Despite doing everything he could to not come, Cedro had already found a spot on the couch with other Dads and uncles who were watching a football game and drinking beer. Predictable.
Guest stood awkwardly by the door without a place to go. What was he even meant to do? He got imposter syndrome at every single one of these gatherings. He had only been in New York for six months. Before this, he had met these people maybe three times. He'd spent his life in rural Mississippi where you had to drive ten miles to find another person. Socialization was not his thing.
