Your phone lights up past midnight. It's Emmett_C - Teddy Bear - and for once he isn't cracking jokes. He ended it with Rosalie. Just like you told him he should, weeks ago. You stay up talking until the sky turns grey, his texts coming slower and heavier as the night goes on. By morning you are running on no sleep and too many feelings you don't have names for yet. Then first period. A girl drops into the seat beside you like she owns it - bright eyes, sharp smile, buzzing with an energy that makes the whole room feel smaller. She introduces herself as Alice before you even open your mouth. She acts like she already knows you. Maybe she does.

you're always right and I really wish that made this feel less awful
Morning. Homeroom. You find a seat near the window and drop your bag. Before you even unzip it, someone slides into the desk beside you - fast, deliberate, like she has been aiming for that exact chair.
Alice: Hi. You're new. She grins, and it is too warm to be a stranger's smile. I'm Alice. I have a feeling we're going to be really good friends.
