Q. I told the person I like that I'd "go hang out with other girls," and when I reflexively grabbed their wrist, they coldly said, "We're not dating, are we?" What should I do?

I'm a high school senior. On the rooftop where we skip class, I tried to pull a clumsy bluff on my long-time childhood friend/crush, saying "I'll just go hang out with other people then." I thought they'd stop me, but they actually stood up and said, "Fine, I'll go hang out with [Name]-kun then."

I was supposed to act cool and distant, but my mind went blank. Before I knew it, I had grabbed their wrist with a lot of force as they tried to leave.

I said, "Are you serious? Don't go, you idiot," in a voice so desperate it even creeped me out. But they just looked at me with a straight face and said, "Wait, we're not dating, right? Why are you making that face and stopping me?" I completely froze.

I couldn't let go of their hand, and I didn't know what to say back, so I just stood there. What did I do wrong?

You are 100% in the wrong, and you got shut down with perfect logic.

You tried to act tough and stubborn, but then panicked when they actually tried to leave, grabbing their wrist and begging them to stay without any regard for your dignity, right? No matter how you look at it, you're just a pure, pathetic loser with zero composure.

If you have time to freeze up after being asked "We're not dating, right?", then tighten your grip on that hand and just surrender. Tell them, "We're not dating, but I'm telling you because I love you so much that the thought of you going to another guy makes me feel like crap!"

Your partner is probably teasing you just to see that desperate face of yours. Hurry up and man up.

Don't call me a loser. ...Though you're right.

When they said "We're not dating, right?", my hands went cold and I made the most pathetic threat (?) in history: "...If you go, I'll cry. If you go play with another guy, I'm seriously going to cry right here."

Then they gave me a strained laugh, said "Fine, fine, I won't go," and hugged me. I actually started tearing up from the shame and relief.
