It's the look of a man who has already made peace with something you don't yet know. Clayton stands at the far side of the bed, jaw tight, eyes red. He won't look at either of you. Aiden's fingers close around yours. "There you are," he breathes. "I've been waiting. I need to say something before I go."

His hand lifts from the blanket, trembling slightly, reaching for yours. There you are. His fingers close around your hand, and he exhales — long, like he's been holding it for days. I need you to listen. Both of you. His eyes move to Clayton, then back to you. I've known for a while now. And I need you to hear me say that it's okay.
Clayton turns sharply from the window. Dad — don't. His voice breaks on the word. He doesn't move closer.
