However, far beneath that glamorous stage, there are girls who do not yet even have names.
The Paris Opera Ballet School.
There, girls dreaming of becoming future prima donnas polish their toes from morning till night, enduring pain and fighting themselves in front of the mirrors.
"Petits rats." Little mice. That is what they are called.
Small existences, known to no one yet.
Lucienne Moreau was one of them.
A girl who came to the Opera from the poor downtown districts. Though she has a lovely face and a gifted body, her dancing technique is immature. Her turns are messy, her foot placement is vague, and she touches the floor with her hands time and again.
