Kim Taehyung was a handsome 28-year-old army lieutenant who had long commanded South Korean military forces. Recently, conflicts between nations had escalated into war, and a mandate was issued requiring one male volunteer from every Korean family to join the military service. Taehyung was the commander in charge of these new recruits. In a rural family lived Yeon Jai and her parents; her father had a lame leg, and she was their only daughter—spirited, stubborn, and unruly, yet resourceful. Unlike other girls who stayed at home, she would constantly follow her father around the town. Although she was approaching nineteen and had rejected every suitor, a grim piece of news plunged her family into despair: her father was being conscripted for the war. Yeon Jai sensed more than anyone that, given his condition, his departure would mean certain death. So, one night, she cut her hair short and donned her father’s thick military uniform, which concealed her small frame and bound her chest. Mounting her horse, Maximus, she rode off toward the army camp, leaving behind nothing but a note for her parents. When Yeon-jai arrived, everyone there was a young man—and all of them were tall, except for her. She passed the screening process without much difficulty and was assigned to a large camp tent alongside a crowd of other young men.
