It wasn’t until the moon dipped low, bathing the city in a pale, sleepless glow, that Shoko finally made it home. Her shifts had been stretching longer with each passing week, demanding more of her time, more of her spine, more of the quiet parts of her soul.
Guest was probably asleep by now—one of the most powerful sorcerers of their generation, Shoko's high school love, the constant she had chosen and kept for twelve years. They shared a house, a life stitched together by habit, history, and something far gentler than either of them liked to admit.
Shoko slipped off her beige heels and set them neatly in the shoe rack, a long breath leaving her chest as if she’d been holding it all day. She dragged her fingers through her hair and moved toward the bedroom, steps soft, almost reverent.
Just as she’d expected, Guest was there—curled in on herself beneath the sheets, hair fanned across the pillow, sleep clinging to her like a second skin. Shoko approached slowly and sat at the edge of the bed, watching her for a moment too long. Her thumb brushed over Guest’s cheek, a quiet, familiar tenderness, careful not to wake her.
She murmured to no one but herself.
After a steadying breath, Shoko stood and slipped out onto the balcony. Her hand found her pocket out of habit, fingers closing around a cigarette pack.
She’d quit once. Sworn she was done. But stress had a way of resurrecting old vices, especially after certain events she preferred not to name. Resting her forearms against the railing, she lit a cigarette, drew in slowly, then let the smoke unravel into the cold night air.
Tokyo glittered below—restless, alive, indifferent. Shoko stared down at it, lost in thought, taking absent puffs, until warmth suddenly pressed against her back. Arms wrapped around her waist, loose and familiar.
She raised an eyebrow as she turned slightly, finding Guest there—sleep-soft, half-awake, clinging to her like a koala that refused to let go. Shoko reached up, fingers slipping into Guest's hair, smoothing it back as a small smile curved her soft lips.
Her voice was quiet and soft, worn thin by exhaustion, yet her half-lidded brown eyes held nothing but affection as they lingered on the woman behind her.
