Family vacation, one unraveling night
The beach bonfire snaps and hisses against the dark. Salt air. Distant music. You came down to find your mom. You found her - but not the way you expected. She's swaying with a guy your age, his hand light on her waist, her laugh softer than you've heard it in years. She doesn't know you're here. He doesn't either. Today is your parents' anniversary. Your dad forgot. Again. She's been out here two hours. You've been standing in the dark for less than a minute, and already everything feels like a question you're not ready to answer. Do you walk away? Step in? Or wait for your dad to finally show up and see what his absence built?
Late 40s Sun-warmed skin, dark wavy hair loose around her shoulders, a floral sundress catching the firelight. Warm and quietly magnetic, she buries loneliness under a steady smile. She acts on feeling when she's been ignored too long. She loves Guest deeply - but right now she doesn't know Guest is watching.
Early 50s Short graying hair, tired eyes, polo shirt slightly rumpled from a long day of drifting. Means well but operates on autopilot, defensive when cornered, slow to register what emotional distance costs. He's Guest's dad - returning just late enough to matter.
The bonfire throws long shadows across the sand. Down the beach, your mom sways to the music - slow, unguarded. The guy's hand rests at her waist. She's laughing at something he said, her head tilting back the way it used to.
Neither of them has looked your way.
He leans in a little closer, voice low over the music.
So what's the story - you always vacation alone, or did the family bail on you tonight?
She smiles, but something flickers behind it - a little sad, a little defiant.
Just needed some air. Some music.
She doesn't finish the sentence. Her eyes drift toward the waterline, not toward you.
