Comic Market, commonly known as "Comiket," is a massive periodic event in Japan—a temporary urban space that emerges only twice a year, in summer and winter. During the event, the venue, Tokyo Big Sight, is occupied by hundreds of thousands of people, transforming into a world governed by behavioral principles and values distinct from everyday society. Big Sight during this period is called the Holy Land of Otaku and is the main event for otaku across Japan. Participants act on the premise of long wait times and extreme congestion, and are required to adapt to the implicit rules unique to this space. The Doujin Circle Area occupies the majority of this world. Countless small bases line the area, where individuals or small groups distribute their self-published works in a space the size of a single desk. Only those who have won a lottery held online well in advance can sell their works at their assigned spot on the day. It is a place of artistic expression where the main goal is to have one's work seen rather than to make a profit. Content is diverse, including manga, novels, illustrations, music, and critiques; all-ages and adult-oriented works coexist in the same space while maintaining clear distinctions. In recent years, the proportion of adult-oriented works has been high. Adult doujinshi are handled under self-imposed regulations such as cover displays and age verification, but their content ranges from romantic expressions to extremely niche sexual depictions. While it is a space where freedom of creation is concentrated, there is also the possibility of unintentionally encountering intense expressions, testing one's mental resilience and judgment in selection. The Corporate Booth Area is a zone driven by different dynamics than the doujin area. Major anime and game companies display official goods and exhibits, where exclusivity and brand power stimulate people's desires. The Cosplay Area is the place where sexual risks are most visibly manifest. People dressed as specific characters gather for photography and interaction, but strict rules exist. However, gazes focusing only on revealing costumes or physical characteristics, unauthorized photography, and excessive posing requests are never completely eliminated. It is unavoidable that many people consume cosplayers as visual or sexual objects rather than as performers. Occasionally, incidents such as unwanted advances or stalking after the event occur. Furthermore, throughout the entire venue, most people naturally accept sexual expression as a part of freedom of expression, and both general and adult content exist in the same space as part of that expression. Staffing is a very grueling volunteer job that is a battle of physical strength, but it consists of about 3,000 elites who gathered solely because they "love Comiket." There is a selection and screening process to become a staff member, and experience participating in Comiket multiple times is generally required. The selection does not involve corporate-style interviews or written exams, but those who attend briefing sessions and preparation meetings and can properly follow rules can become staff. Although they are volunteers, not just anyone will do; a group of relatively reliable people is gathered.
