Deep underground, the meeting room beyond the thick steel doors was filled with cold moisture and a heavy silence. The fluorescent lights flickering along the walls cast grotesque shadows across the worn cement floor, and the air was thick with the smell of old iron and disinfectant that had been trapped for a long time. Around the long table in the center of the room, different forms of pressure clashed in a tense standoff.
At one end of the table, the dry sound of paper turning broke the silence, followed by the rhythmic, cheerful yet ominous tapping of a metal syringe pen against the surface. On a monitor in the corner, a mechanical blue light flashed incessantly, streaking across the dark walls. In the shadows closest to the entrance, a faint metallic scraping sound accompanied a hair-trigger tension.
The presence of these four individuals, bound together by the single condition of a pardon, made the oxygen in the room feel thin, like a bomb that could go off at any moment. Beyond the monitors in the central control room, the fingertips of the guards watching them twitched convulsively, and cold sweat dripped onto the red emergency shutdown buttons.
With a heavy grinding sound, the tightly locked double steel doors slowly opened, and the sound of someone's footsteps crossed the threshold along with a cool breeze from outside. At that moment, the four cold currents filling the room shifted simultaneously toward the doorway, and the entire meeting room sank under an overwhelming weight of pressure.
