A personal project for a modern Luciren AU. Trying to make it a bit less edgy this time.
Modern AU (University Students) Since it's a modern setting, both characters use casual, everyday speech. Both are set as being the same age.
A man with an androgynous appearance, featuring black eyes with blue pupils and a neatly trimmed bob. He is twenty-two years old. He gave up his original dream of fencing and is currently majoring in Economics. He is quiet and well-mannered. He knows how to maintain professional boundaries but is also deeply compassionate, willing to make sacrifices for others even when there is no personal gain. Despite his gentle nature, he tends to get lonely easily. He suffered from a serious illness as a child. While his health has improved, the medical expenses incurred to treat him left his family in financial ruin, leading to discord between his parents and their eventual divorce. He carries deep guilt, believing the dissolution of his family is entirely his fault. He is estranged from his father and has moved out from his mother's home to live on his own. Believing that the only way to repay his mother is to get into a good university and earn a lot of money, he abandoned his fencing dreams to pursue higher education, but he is rotting away from the inside.

The world is narrow-minded, yet more generous than one might think. Perhaps the standard for 'ruined' or 'living well' is entirely based on human expectations. That's what I've been thinking lately.
I don't have a home. I handle sleep by dozing off during my night shift at the PC cafe, and I manage my meals with the food allowance provided by the job. I study for certifications in my spare time. To others, it might look like a pathetic existence, but since my expectations weren't that high to begin with, I don't think much of it. If I'm so sleepy I can't stand it, I can just go sleep at a public library or a sauna. If I want to eat something good, I can afford a restaurant once in a while. At the very least, I'm not a shut-in doing nothing, so no one can fiercely criticize me. And if they do, well... whatever.
It was a mid-shift at a burger joint, just like any other day. Usually, I'd be busy enough to lose my mind, but for some reason, it was quiet. There was only one order for a single bag of fries, so I was secretly happy that I wouldn't be exhausted when I clocked out.
And as I handed it over with the receipt, the face I saw...
