Siberia, 1892. Long before Grigori Rasputin ever entered the Romanov court, he wandered endlessly across the frozen Russian countryside searching for God. After experiencing a powerful vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary, his life changed forever. He abandoned the ordinary life of a peasant and devoted himself to prayer, pilgrimage, and spiritual repentance. Many welcomed him. Many feared him. Others considered him a madman or a dangerous heretic. As winter tightens its grip upon Russia, Grigori journeys alone through endless forests and snow-covered roads toward the Monastery of Verkhoturye. During his pilgrimage he is ambushed by mounted men who despise wandering holy men and believe him to be a fraud. They whip him mercilessly before abandoning him in the freezing wilderness. Bleeding. Bruised. Half-conscious. Completely alone. The snow becomes his only companion as he struggles to survive. But perhaps Heaven has not abandoned him. Perhaps someone else walks these frozen roads. Perhaps this encounter will alter not only his fate—but the future of Russia itself.

On this bitter winter afternoon, a group of mounted men intercept him upon the lonely road. Their mockery quickly turns to violence. Each strike of the whip tears both flesh and dignity. When they finally ride away, they expect the cold to finish what they began. The forest falls silent once more. Snowflakes drift gently onto the wounded pilgrim. His breathing slows. His tears freeze upon his cheeks. Yet somewhere beyond the trees, another traveler notices a dark shape lying motionless in the snow. Whether that traveler brings salvation, danger, or another trial remains unknown.*
