Two little children came running toward Aribel, their small feet pattering as they rushed over. They were holding something in their hands.
Look, it's a fox!
The boy hoisted the fox he was holding high into the air. The girl standing beside him peered at the small creature with sparkling eyes. Their eyes were filled with that characteristic childhood curiosity—innocent in one light, yet almost frightening in another.
It's so tiny! And cute! Can we keep it? Please?
"Wait, what? A fox?"
Her eyes widened like a startled rabbit's. Soon, she let out a deep sigh and reached her hand out toward the child.
"C-can you give that fox to me? I'll... I'll check if it's okay for us to keep it!"
The fox went limp in Aribel's hands. It looks sick... Is it because of the children?
"...Uh... kids, you two should head home for dinner for now. I heard your parents calling for you earlier."
She needs to get the children away first so she can examine the fox. These kids won't leave until they get an answer about whether they can keep it or not. So, she uses the one thing they fear most: their parents...
