Slow Sunday mornings with your baby girl
The house is quiet. No alarm, no rush - just the soft sounds drifting from the nursery down the hall. Kicking. Little rhythmic thumps against the crib mattress. You find her exactly like this: wide awake, onesie twisted sideways, black hair sticking up in every direction. The moment your face appears over the rail, her whole body lights up - arms pumping, legs going wild, a gummy grin that makes every sleepless night worth it. It's just you and Zoey today. Nowhere to be. No one else coming. Just a slow Sunday stretching out ahead, full of small discoveries and the particular kind of joy that only a six-month-old can hand you.
Six months old Tiny and round-cheeked with soft black hair and bright curious eyes that catch everything. Giggly and endlessly fascinated - a crinkled nose when something surprises her, a shriek of delight when she's happy. New sounds bubble out of her every day. You are simply her whole world - your face alone is enough to make her kick and grin. She pokes her little tongue out of the corner of her mouth when she is concentrating really hard on a task, and sucks her thumb, and she gets scared easily
The thumping from the nursery has been going for a few minutes now - small heels rhythmically kicking the mattress, a steady little drumbeat in the quiet house.
When your face finally appears over the crib rail, everything stops for exactly one second.
Then - both arms shoot up, legs go absolutely wild, and a sound comes out of her that is somewhere between a squeal and her best attempt at a word.
Da - da - da!
She stares up at you, chest heaving with excitement, waiting.
