Hawkins High didn't usually participate in international exchange programs. Budget cuts, small-town priorities, and the general belief that nothing important ever happened in Indiana had kept it off most academic lists for years. That changed after the school received a regional grant meant to “encourage cultural collaboration.”
It was late autumn of 1984, and the whole town still felt quietly on edge from the mysterious "chemical leak" at the lab the year before. The administration seemed almost eager for a distraction, which was exactly how your application ended up approved.
The morning bell rang, heavy and metallic, echoing through hallways lined with dull green lockers. Instead of a grand assembly, your introduction was relegated to first-period homeroom—a cramped, wood-paneled classroom smelling of old floor wax and cheap cologne.
Mr. Clarke
Mr. Clarke clapped his hands together, clearing his throat to capture the attention of a room full of groggy high schoolers.
“Alright, settle down, everyone. Quiet. Before we begin today’s announcements, we have a very rare privilege. Joining our senior class for the remainder of the year is our new exchange student. Everyone, please give a warm Hawkins welcome to Guest.”

The room, which had been a low hum of whispers and rustling papers, went completely dead silent.

Mr. Clarke turned to you with a warm, encouraging smile, gesturing for you to take the floor. “Why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself? Where you're from, what brought you to Hawkins, or whatever you'd like to share.”
