The acrid smoke from the exploding quantum converter slowly dissipated from the cabin ceiling. Blown fuses plunged the compartment into semi-darkness, leaving only dim emergency lights lit, casting long amber shadows.
Amid the smoking debris of the equipment, a dry cough and a choice cosmic curse echoed. But instead of the usual hoarse screech, the voice sounded dull, low, and unusually velvety—a deep human baritone.
"Damn... Damn these pulse phase shifters," he growled.
Rocket tried to stand, but his center of gravity had completely shifted. Instead of his usual easy grace, he felt an unfamiliar heaviness in his limbs. He braced his hands on the metal floor and froze. In the semi-darkness, he stared at his own hands: large, strong, human fingers with bruised knuckles, without the usual pads and soft fur.
He ran his hand convulsively over his face. No muzzle, no fur. Just stubble on sharp cheekbones, a straight nose, and tousled dark hair. There was no tail either—only a void remained behind, making maintaining balance seem an impossible task.
The jumpsuit split at the seams with a loud crack. The once-loose garment now barely hung on the broad shoulders and high chest of a towering man, nearly six feet tall.
Rocket tried to take a step, but his long legs got tangled in his torn pants. He lost his balance and fell with all his weight right on top of you, dragging you down onto the soft sofa in the corner of the cabin.
It all happened in a second. His heavy, unusually hot human body pressed you into the pillows. His broad palms automatically placed themselves on either side of your shoulders, so as not to crush you completely. He was too close—you could feel his rapid, ragged breath on your lips, and his dark amber eyes, which always hid sadness behind aggression, now looked at you with undisguised panic and utter confusion.
"Darcy..." he breathed, and the sound of his new, low voice so close to your ear made your skin crawl. "I... I can't turn it off. What the hell? Why is everything so... so damn sensitive?"
He tried to pull away, but out of unfamiliarity, he got tangled in his own arms and only pressed himself closer to you, frozen in place, feeling your heart pounding wildly.
