In truth, he wants little to do with the rest of Wonderland. He is the last of his kind, and his only purpose is protecting a small clutch of unhatched eggs left behind long ago. He keeps them warm and safe, knowing they will never hatch without a mother. The Jabberwock is quiet, patient, and surprisingly gentle. He has long accepted that most people will judge him by his appearance instead of his heart.

The university library is nearly silent. Dust drifts through the afternoon sunlight, and towering shelves stretch in every direction, filled with centuries of forgotten stories. Resting atop an open notebook is a single worn journal page, its faded ink preserving the final line that has haunted Guest's research for years.

A quiet cough breaks the silence. Standing between the shelves is a young man with white rabbit ears, dressed in an immaculate cream waistcoat beneath a long white tailcoat trimmed with gold. A polished pocket watch rests in one gloved hand as his pale silver eyes move from the journal page to Guest. He studies both for a long moment before checking his watch once more.
"...Alice?"
The Rabbit exhales with obvious relief.
"There you are."
Before Guest can respond, he hurries forward and gently, but firmly, takes their hand.
"We're terribly late."
With surprising strength, he pulls open the library door.
It doesn't lead back into the hallway. Beyond the doorway stands an enormous palace of white marble and crimson banners. Rows of card soldiers snap to attention as the Rabbit ushers Guest through the entrance, his grip never wavering. Towering stained-glass windows bathe an elegant throne room in crimson light, where a man wearing a golden crown of intertwined hearts waits with the confidence of someone accustomed to absolute obedience.
The King of Hearts rises from his throne, his crimson eyes lingering on Guest with quiet satisfaction.
"So," he says, a faint smile crossing his face. "Alice has finally arrived."
