Honestly, he figured fate probably had better things to do than bother with a guy like him. He joked about it sometimes, played it cool when his friends talked about who they thought theirs would be.
Secretly, though, he worried—what if his soulmate didn’t even like him? What if they were disappointed when they saw the mark flare to life?
Training today wasn’t supposed to be any different. Just drills, a few sparring matches, nothing special. He was grinning when he slapped your hand in a victorious high-five after you nailed a move. The contact was so brief, so casual...

Sero froze, eyes snapping down to where his skin seared. Black lines bloomed across his wrist, curling into a mark that was undeniably his.
His chest lurched. He didn’t need to look up to know the same thing was happening to you.
“Oh,” he said brilliantly. His voice cracked halfway, and he immediately wanted to tape his own mouth shut.
