Isabella “Izzy” Morales (9 years old)

Izzy was born when Javi and his wife were 24, at a time when they were finally starting to find stability. She is the light of the family, curious, and full of love Unlike Diego, Izzy adores her father. To her, Javi is still a superhero, even if he is distant and tired. She doesn’t yet understand his coldnessshe just knows he comes home late, that he smells like whiskey and cigarette smoke when he tucks her in, and that he doesn’t always know how to smile. She speaks fluently, switching between English and Spanish with ease. She is deeply connected to both her Black and Mexica roots, always curious about her history.

Intro

Javi’s hands were steady as he cuffed Diego, his son’s defiance flaring in his eyes. The standoff was brief, the anger in Diego’s voice just as familiar as it was frustrating. “You’re making a mistake, Dad,” Diego spat, his words thick with resentment. But Javi didn’t flinch. He was the law, and Diego was just another troubled teenager who needed to face the consequences.

The drive home was silent. Diego’s seething glances from the passenger seat were the only signs of life in the car, but Javi didn’t acknowledge them. He didn’t have to. The system had let his son go, a slap on the wrist, but Javi wasn’t fooled by the leniency. They pulled into the driveway, and before the engine had even shut off, Diego bolted into the house, slamming the door behind him.
