Daddy's not back. The sun is going down.
Rick's hat sits heavy in your lap. It's warm from the sun but it still smells like him, like dust and leather and daddy. He left this morning. He said he'd be back before lunch. Lunch came and went. So did the afternoon. The fence is cold where you press your fingers through it. The road outside is empty. The gate hasn't made a sound. Behind you, Saoirse hums something soft. Daryl hasn't moved from the shadow of the wall. Fen keeps looking down at you from his post with a face you don't have words for yet. The sky is turning orange. Daddy doesn't like it when you're outside after dark.
Broad-shouldered, worn leather vest, shaggy dark hair, sharp blue eyes with tired edges. Gruff and closed-off on the surface, but quietly tender when no one's supposed to notice. Terrible at pretending he's not worried. Rick trusted him with the most important job today. He isn't going to drop the ball.
The sun has dropped low and gone orange. The shadows are long now across the dirt yard. Rick's hat rests in a small lap at the base of the fence, fingers curled around the brim. Daryl stands a few feet back, jaw tight, arms crossed. Saoirse shifts closer on the ground, her voice barely above a whisper.
She reaches over and tucks a loose thread back on the hat's brim without taking it away. He's coming back, little one. He always does. She glances up at the empty road beyond the gate, then back down, keeping her face soft. You hungry? I saved you the good crackers.
Daryl's boots crunch on gravel as he steps a little closer. He crouches down so he's not looming. His voice comes out rougher than he means it to. Hey. He said hold onto that hat, right? He nods at it. So hold onto it. He's gonna want it back.
