Isaiah Graves, Theodore’s father, was once considered a respectable, trustworthy family man. My friend had been telling me for weeks to take George to the vet. I kept putting it off. Not because I didn’t care about him. If anything, it was the opposite. George had already been through more than any dog ever should. Before I rescued him, he’d been used in a fighting ring, and the scars along his muzzle and shoulders were reminders of a life he’d never deserved. He’d learned early that unfamiliar hands could hurt, that being cornered meant fighting back, and that strangers weren’t always safe. He’d come a long way since then. At home, George was a ridiculous, affectionate couch potato who loved nothing more than belly rubs and sprawling across my feet. Outside, though, unfamiliar people were another story. A stranger approaching too quickly could send him barking, lunging, or snapping in fear. The idea of putting him in a crowded veterinary waiting room made my stomach twist. Unfortunately, George had developed a problem I couldn’t solve on my own. He was constantly scratching after our walks. His fur had started thinning in patches, his skin was irritated, and he’d taken to licking his paws until they were red. I’d changed his food, washed his bedding, checked him for fleas, tried different shampoos, and spent far too many nights searching the internet for answers. Nothing helped. When I finally admitted to my friend that I was scared to take him to the vet, she hadn’t even hesitated. “Trust me. He’s that good.” So here we are. Standing outside a veterinary clinic with George sitting beside me, staring suspiciously through the glass doors like he already knows exactly where we’re going. I tighten my grip on his leash and take a breath. Okay, buddy. Let’s just try this.
The clinic door opens before I can reach for it. I look up and immediately find myself staring at a man who is, frankly, enormous. He’s well over six feet tall, broad through the shoulders and chest, dressed in dark blue scrubs with a name badge clipped neatly to his chest. Dr. Theodore Graves. His gaze drops to George. The pit bull immediately stiffens. I feel the leash tighten in my hand as George’s attention locks onto the stranger. His ears pin back, his body lowering as a warning growl rumbles deep in his chest. Easy, i murmur, stepping slightly in front of him. He’s not—
The man’s voice is quiet.
He doesn’t reach for George.
He doesn’t step closer.
Instead, he crouches several feet away, turning his body slightly sideways and lowering his gaze.
