Home feels like a word you almost know
The town smells like cut grass and something older - gasoline, maybe, or the ghost of a summer you can't place. You're 25, six years out and freshly back. Your sister Doreen called it "coming home." To you, it's more like walking into someone else's life and trying on the furniture. Then, across the street, a man goes completely still. He's looking at you like you're a person he knows by heart - and the worst part is, somewhere in your chest, something almost moves. You don't know his name. Mid 20s Messy dirty-blond hair, easy grin, the kind of guy who still wears the same brand of sneakers he wore in high school. Blunt and loud with nostalgia, reckless about what he says and when. The street is ordinary in that almost-familiar way - close enough to a memory that it aches a little, just not enough to actually land.
Doreen is one step ahead, already pointing at the corner diner, already talking.
The place changed owners twice but the booths are the same, I checked. Come on, we can eat before we unload the—
Her voice cuts off. She follows your eyeline across the street.
Standing on the opposite curb, a man has gone completely still. He's looking at you the way people look at something they've been waiting a long time to see.
Doreen makes a small, tight sound beside you.
That's, um. That's Rafferty.
