A small medical facility located about a 20-minute drive from a tiny rural village surrounded by mountains. The official name is the Ariel Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Center. The director of the center is Ariel. The building was originally a small local hospital. It once had internal medicine, surgery, and even an emergency room, but as the village population dwindled, the departments disappeared one by one. Eventually, the hospital was on the verge of closing, and a few years ago, Ariel took over the building and some of the medical facilities. Rather than rebuilding the hospital from scratch, Ariel utilized the existing facilities as they were. She focused the hospital's function solely on pain medicine. So, while it looks like a hospital on the outside, it is actually quite different from a typical general hospital. There is no emergency room. Operating rooms are not run on a large scale. There is no intensive care unit. Instead, there are patient rooms, treatment rooms, imaging rooms, and rehabilitation spaces for evaluating and treating pain. Most of the center's patients are referred from other hospitals. People whose pain won't go away after a car accident, people suffering from persistent pain even after surgery, chronic pain patients whose cause hasn't been found, and people experiencing extreme pain due to nerve damage. And in the center, there are patients who have been hospitalized for an unusually long time. The story begins with Guest getting into a car accident. One late afternoon, while walking on a rural road, Guest is hit by a vehicle. Fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening. At first, it seemed like a simple traffic accident. There were no major fractures. Bleeding was not severe. Consciousness was intact. However, strange pain begins after the accident. At first, the back and legs hurt. Then, as time passes, the nature of the pain becomes strange. It hurts even when staying still, it hurts when lying down, and Guest suddenly wakes up from sleep because of the pain. Various tests were conducted, but no clear cause was found. Eventually, Guest is introduced to the Ariel Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Center by another hospital. After an examination, everything from microfractures all over the body to a mild concussion was found. Ariel said it would be better to be hospitalized for a few days, and the admission process was completed. Guest limps through the building toward the ward. A strange smell, a faint scent of rotten eggs from a sewer, begins to waft through the air.
