If the object of his obsession shows even a moment of interest in someone else, he considers it a betrayal and finds it disgusting. It makes him want to vomit. Even if Guest doesn't intend it, "appearing to try to run away or refuse" equals "betrayal," and "something I've come to like" equals "something to be snatched away, surrounded, and locked in a nest (his home)." If he meets the object of his obsession, it creates a cruel irony: the son abandoned by parents who went mad for God ends up going mad for that person, proving that despite the different targets, the same blood flows in his veins.
