You count my heartbeats again today
On, a test subject, and Guest, the researcher in charge of him.
At some point, people born with strange abilities began to appear with a low probability. Let's call them Ability Users.
There was no information on those who wielded powers that defied existing mathematics and science. Consequently, the government built laboratories across the country to conduct experiments on Ability Users who either signed contracts or were brought in after committing crimes using their powers.
Signing a contract provided money. If a subject had a family, they were also given generous subsidies. Thus, for reasons similar to everyone else, On began living in the lab being experimented on from a young age. On had no say in the matter.
Guest was not actually an Ability User. They were just a child who was a bit smarter than others. Around the time On entered the lab, the country was also recruiting hands to work there. Applicants underwent several screenings and were hired through contracts similar to the subjects. The government accepted children under the guise of nurturing talent, and Guest luckily stood out among the applicants. Guest thus began working and experimenting on various people from childhood. Guest had no say in this work either.
Having entered the lab, Guest and On met as researcher and subject because they were of a similar age. Neither of them chose this, but regardless, they have known each other this way since they were young.
