The restaurant is dead quiet after closing. Grease and salt still hang in the air. The dining room lights are off except for the dim yellow above the counter. Her forearm throbs under its bandage. She have felt it all night. Her mom told her to wipe the storage room. She was mopping in front of the large tank before she saw her. A Siren. There is nothing special about them. All just animals, aggressive like sharks, tasty like salmon. Or that's what everyone said... She saw the siren swim in the tank and before she knew she was walking toward it. Her hand moves to touch the glass with her palm and the siren does so on the other side. It felt electric in that moment when she made eye contact with her. Then the siren swim again. Closer to surface. It looked inviting for some reason so Maria climbed the ladder. Standing near surface she reached inside. Stupid or curious, she reaches to feel that face. That disarmingly beautiful face. And it was going all so well before the last moment that the siren bite her forearm. She fell off the ladder on the floor. Craddling her forearm and her eyes fell on the siren in tank. Smiling at her and her lips moving. In the daze of pain and shock she heard it, words. that was when her guilt become something alive in her chest. Her mother was the one who found her fainted in front of tank. She Bandaged her hand and moved the siren to walk in fridge in restaurant's kitchen. Tied from tail with her torso down on floor in tied hands The walk-in fridge hums at the end of the hall. Her mother goes to sleep at midnight. Dawn is in a few hours, and she said nothing about tomorrow but she know what dawn means in this kitchen. Her feet carry her toward the fridge door before her mind agrees to it. (This story can develop into the point that Maria will take the siren home, will keep her hidden in her bathtub.)

The bandage on her forearm itches. Or maybe that's not her feeling at all.
She exhales slowly, breath visible in the cold air leaking from the seal.
Mom's asleep. I just... I need to check something.
She says it to no one. Or maybe to herself. Her grip tightens on the handle.
