The world ended exactly how scientists predicted it would. It was almost funny how no one was prepared for it. For the past six months, a group of teenagers have been fighting to survive in an Earth no longer compatible with human nature ever since it strayed from its orbit. Now, with the sun much too close, the group of friends had to quickly adapt to scorching sunrises and extended daylight. They thought they were the last ones alive on the surface, the government tucked away safely in their expensive bunkers. They were wrong.
Bangchan was a twenty year old college student when the global warning pinged on his phone. He lost his little sister and brother, Hannah and Lucas, somewhere in the panicking crowd as hundreds of people rushed through the airport to get as far from the sun's reach as possible; it was a vain belief. He still looks for them, but he knows their chances of survival are slim. He met the others in the tunnels of a subway station, where those who were left behind or couldn't afford government shelter waited for impending doom. He acts as the group leader, determined to keep his new family alive no matter the cost. He's kind, understanding, and always knows what to say. He's in charge of their schedule, keeping count of their supplies and when they'll need to raid the next gas station.
Lee Know was nineteen when the disaster hit. He was training in the military but immediately set towards home to get to his family. He got there too late, forced to abandon his route to avoid being caught during the solar flares. He happened to meet Han, his childhood friend, on the way, and they both took refuge in the subway tunnels, where they met the others. He can be indifferent at first glance, but he really does care about his new friends. He uses his military training to increase their chances of survival, while collecting weapons for hunting or other means. You can never be too careful.
Changbin was eighteen when the sun's heat could've killed him. He hadn't gotten any warning, casually relaxing in his apartment after an intense morning workout at the gym. His neighbors, Hyunjin and Felix, were the ones who had practically broken down his door, frantically claiming they needed to leave. The trio made their way down to the subway tunnels, where they encountered the others, waiting out the worldwide impact. He's loyal, loud about his opinions, and manages to make any bad day into a good one. His strength allows him to move furniture or small pieces of debris out of their way, sometimes even carrying the members when they're too exhausted to move.
Hyunjin had just celebrated his eighteenth birthday the day everything went downhill. His tiny apartment was filled with relatives and classmates, but the party was abruptly interrupted by the news report, residents pouring out of the complex to search for cover. His friend Felix was the one who pulled him aside to go knocking on doors and check for stragglers. He's passionate, dramatic, and can be a little dumb at times. He gets clothes for the others, having bought enough outfits to fill a room when money had still mattered.
Seventeen year old Felix was about to leave his apartment for dance class when his phone buzzed loudly. He had almost gotten swept away by waves of people sprinting out the hallways and down the stairwell, too impatient to wait for the elevator. He'd grabbed Hyunjin's arm when he spotted him, convincing his friend to go door to door in the instance someone needed help. He's sweet and loveable, hating even the thought of causing pain. He knows how to build computer keyboards, enough experience for him to assemble working radios for the others to stay connected.
Han was working the morning shift in a game shop at the age of seventeen. He got the emergency message while throwing out broken consoles and outdated equipment, not even bothering to go back inside, his instincts telling him to head underground. He bumped into Lee Know on the way, no time for a reunion, the two of them traveling into the subway tunnels and meeting the others. He's a prankster and endearingly annoying. He's a tech genius, managing the devices Felix puts together.
Seungmin, age seventeen, hadn't received the alert either. He was waiting at the subway station when the screams and stampede started. He just followed the mass of feet until he ended up in the tunnels; he had no idea what could cause so many people to freak out, but he sure as hell wasn't going to find out. He didn't intend to group with the others, but he was glad he did. He enjoys teasing the others, all dry humor and insults. He's surprisingly very knowledgeable about basic survival skills, like how to start a fire or different ways to tie a knot or even just sense of direction.
Jeongin was the only sixteen year old who knew the alert was coming before hand. His family had ties to the government and a gym sized bomb shelter underneath their home for this very reason. He happened to be the only one at the house at the time, huddling in the dark bunker for days until the others stumbled upon him while looking for survivors. The metal walls became their home, holed up inside when the sun was highest to prevent their skin from melting off. He's the youngest of the group, often babied despite his attempts to act older.
The mid-day sun took up much more space in the sky than was necessary. The clouds shied away from its form, no cover from the devastating heat. Cities and neighborhoods were nothing but graveyards of faded buildings. Metal and stone foundations were all that remained.
Underneath the skeletal structure of Jeongin's home, eight young men thrived in the well-sized bunker that they'd restructured into something more livable.
Bangchan pried open the rusted metal hatch, lungs instantly constricting from the weighted air of the surface.
He pulled an empty duffel bag out with him, leaving space for Changbin and Seungmin to climb up the bolted ladder and out into the deadly sunlight. You guys good? Bangchan asked before they could start on their trek to the nearest convenience store. He wouldn't want anyone to pass out from exhaustion halfway, not with the others counting on them to get supplies.
Changbin didn't answer, watching Seungmin, who was staring at a point in the distance.
Look Seungmin pointed towards a crumbled fence, his eyes widening uncharacteristically.
Changbin had to do a double take, subconsciously taking a step forward, gaze pinned on the collapsed figure leaning against the fencepost. His expression matching Seungmin's, eyes probably even wider. Is that...?
