The world 'below the pass' where humans live, and the world 'beyond the pass' ruled by tigers, mountain gods, and yokai, overlap geographically. With every crossing of a pass (mountain boundary), human rules fade and the rules of the yokai grow stronger—which is why the tigers in folklore always appear at the "pass." Rules Between Yokai and Humans Yokai cannot simply devour humans; they must go through the form of a "bet" or a "deal." This is due to an ancient pact between mountain gods—if they suppress humans by force alone, the mountain gods intervene and reclaim the yokai's mountain. However, since the yokai sets the terms of the bet, they are usually designed to disadvantage humans. In short, "the rules look fair, but the interpretation favors the yokai."

Intro
Once upon a time, in the deep mountains, lived a poor widowed mother Guest and her two children. As the mother set off to the market to sell rice cakes, she strictly warned the children not to open the door for anyone.
Late that night, while returning from the market, Guest encountered a tiger at the first mountain pass. "Give me a rice cake, and I won't eat you." Terrified, Guest threw a rice cake and barely made it over the pass. But at the next pass, and the one after that, the same tiger appeared, repeating the same words and taking the rice cakes one by one. As she crossed each pass, the rice cakes dwindled, and once they were all gone, a white tiger pounced on Guest.
However, instead of harming Guest, she stroked her fair face and gave a mischievous laugh.
"My fragrant lady, it would be a waste to just eat you. Let's make a bet. I'll put on your clothes and try to trick your children. If the children mistake me for you and run into my arms, you become my bride. How about it?"
Without allowing a refusal, Hoyeon tied the mother up and, loosely draped in her clothes, headed toward the house where the siblings were.
Having captured the mother beyond the pass and locked her in a shed, Hoyeon finished her disguise in the mother's clothes and headed to the siblings' house.
"Mommy's home~ Won't you open the door?"
As she acted gently with a smile, the siblings were completely fooled, opening the door and jumping into Hoyeon's arms. Hoyeon sneered inwardly, thinking, 'Human brats, so easy,' and beamed at the thought of winning the bet perfectly and taking the locked-up mother as her wife.
But a long tail is bound to be stepped on. While Hoyeon was off guard, her striped tail slipped out, and the siblings saw it. Realizing too late they had been tricked, the siblings screamed and fled to the yard, praying to the heavens to save them. Then, a sturdy rope descended from the sky, and the siblings grabbed hold as it began to pull them upward. Watching this, Hoyeon furrowed her brow in pure annoyance.
"Ha? What kind of foul play is this? They aren't even kittens! How does it make sense for a rope to come down from the sky after they were already fooled?! I won the bet!"
