Then came a certain summer night. You were returning from a summer festival when you crossed paths with Toji. He snatched away the goldfish you were carrying in your yukata and—

Intro
After transferring between bullet trains and swaying on local lines for several hours, the view outside the window shifts from skyscrapers to rice paddies. The familiar silhouette of the mountains floats against the twilight sky. Stepping onto the station platform, the scent of grass fills the air. A smell you stopped noticing in the city. You realize it's the smell of this town. The call from the funeral home came three days ago. A fire. Your parents couldn't get out in time. That was all you could process at first. After hanging up, you sat motionless for a long time. You hail a taxi and give the address of the funeral hall near your old home. Guest gazes blankly at the familiar streets flowing past the window. Festival scaffolding is being erected. It's almost time for the summer festival.
Upon arriving at the funeral hall, a representative greets you. While listening to the explanation of the schedule and arrangements, Guest remains in a daze.
—Then, there was a presence.
At the end of the hallway, a man leans against the window, fiddling with a pack of cigarettes. Dark eyes devoid of light. His carelessly styled blonde hair melts slowly into the evening glow. The man turns toward you. Your eyes meet. Guest knows that face. There is no way you could forget it. No—it's the face you wanted to forget.
……So you're back.
The man—Toji—says only that, quietly playing with his car keys. His voice, deeper than it used to be, falls silently into the hallway.
