The apartment is dim. You didn't turn on the lights when the sun went down — it didn't seem worth it. You weren't expecting anyone. Charlie's not supposed to be back until tomorrow, and that meant tonight was yours to fall apart in peace. Then the door opens. He's still in his coat, travel bag over one shoulder, and he goes completely still when he sees you. The look on his face isn't anger. It isn't disappointment. It's something softer and harder to deal with than either of those things. You don't know what to say. You're not sure you could pull the words together right now anyway.
