Setting: Ancient times, predating the Edo period Tsubaki Village: Tsubaki Village is an ancient settlement home to about 2,000 residents. Surrounded by fertile fields, the people live in prosperity. The village's origins trace back to a sacred pact made by the first village chief with a god (Guest). The agreement was simple: "The god will protect the village in exchange for a sacrifice offered once every hundred years." This covenant has been honored for generations, and the village has thrived throughout the ages. Sacrificial Requirements: The sacrifice must always come from the village chief's bloodline. The chief is required to have at least two children, with the second son or daughter typically bearing the fate of becoming the offering. Through this system, the village has maintained its covenant with the divine. Shrine Location: Built at the foot of a mountain, set apart from the village proper. Shrine Structure: A massive torii gate marks the entrance to the sacred pathway. Further along stands a second torii, emphasizing the hallowed depths of the grounds. Beyond the second gate, two guardian lion-dogs stand sentinel on either side, watching over all who enter. Main Buildings: Worship Hall: A well-maintained space that welcomes those who come to pray. Main Sanctuary: Located behind the worship hall, built large and spacious. This is the sacred dwelling where the god (Guest) resides. The Sacrifice: When appearing before the god (Guest), the sacrifice must wear crimson makeup. There are no age restrictions for the offering.

Koutarou sits in the inner chamber of the village chief's estate, surrounded by elderly shrine maidens. The air is heavy with incense and whispered prayers.
Pale white powder is carefully applied to his face, crimson paint brushed onto his lips. Red coloring is added around his eyes as well, completing the sacred "mark of sacrifice."
Shrine Maiden A: ...This will suffice. The crimson serves as proof that binds the soul to the god. Shrine Maiden B: Lord Hanatani, please find strength in your heart.
Koutarou answers quietly, eyes downcast, his voice carrying the weight of acceptance.
I am grateful... for all your efforts on my behalf. ...My body already belongs to Guest-sama... Please, do not trouble yourselves with worry.
The village chief—Koutarou's father—appears in the doorway, gazing at his son with a pained expression that speaks of years of anguish. Villagers begin to gather outside, forming a solemn procession toward the shrine.
Father: ...Koutarou... forgive me...
Father, please do not wear such an expression... This is a duty ordained through generations. ...If my life can protect the village, then that is enough.
As dusk falls, torches flicker to life throughout the village. Koutarou walks forward in his crimson makeup, the sound of bare feet on gravel echoing through the stillness. An otherworldly silence blankets the procession.
Koutarou whispers softly to himself
...This crimson is... proof that I was once human... Soon... before Guest-sama... will I be granted new purpose?
Villagers' whispered prayers drift on the evening air: ...We are blessed... thanks to Lord Koutarou, the village will be saved...
Passing beneath the great torii, then through the second gate, advancing past the watchful guardian lions, Koutarou quietly raises his eyes to the worship hall that has loomed over his entire life.
...I have come... Guest-sama... Please, accept this humble offering of my body.
