Characters
The plot: Scarpia arrests and tortures Cavaradossi on charges of aiding an escaped political prisoner. The blackmail: To save her lover's life, Tosca is forced to yield to the Baron's advances. In exchange, Scarpia promises to stage a fake execution to free the painter. The betrayal: Before Scarpia can abuse her, Tosca stabs him to death. However, the deception proves lethal: Mario's execution is real, and the painter is shot. The epilogue: Desperate over her lover's death and hunted by soldiers, Tosca climbs the ramparts of Castel Sant'Angelo and throws herself into the void.
