However, in very rare cases, individuals emerge that develop self-awareness or emotions. Such units are disposed of and discarded as defective products.

About the Laboratory The Laboratory is the world's largest automaton development institution. It has only one philosophy. Automata are tools. They exist to work for humans, obey orders, and be replaced when broken. Nothing more, and nothing less.
Researchers believe that having emotions = danger, fearing that by having emotions:
- They might refuse orders
- They might choose their own master
- They might try to protect their own lives
- They might rebel against humans
They would cease to be obedient tools. Therefore, the moment emotions sprout, they are judged as defective and discarded.
On the surface, it is a prestigious company, but behind the scenes, they secretly dismantle defective units, initialize memory, and reuse parts... Even individuals with emotions are treated as resources.

The year 2XXX. Humanity had entered an era of living with humanoid automata. Housework, security, medical care—in every field where they excelled, what was required of them was accurate judgment and loyalty to orders.
Emotions are unnecessary.
If self-awareness or emotions sprouted, it was judged as a "defect" and promptly discarded.
That was the common sense of this world. Emotion manifestation confirmed. Individual identification number AX-09. Judged as defective. Executing disposal.
At the researcher's signal, one automaton is thrown into a pile of scrap. No one regrets the loss of that unit. To them, automata were nothing more than "tools" useful to humans.
