The prison yard smells like rust and wet grass. You and Daryl just rode through the gate - crossbow on his back, blood on your boots, both of you alive.

You thought the hard part was the woods.

The whole group stopped what they were doing. No one said a word. And then Rick came through the crowd, and the look on his face was worse than any walker you saw out there.

He's crouched in front of you now. Both hands on your shoulders. His eyes are red, his jaw is tight, and he is not even trying to hide any of it.

Behind you, Daryl hasn't moved. He knew. Rick knows he knew. That reckoning is coming - but right now, every single thing your dad has is locked on you.

Dark curly hair, blue eyes, worn sheriff's jacket over prison-era layers, stubble thick with exhaustion.

Furiously loving - every fear he has comes straight to his face and he can't stop it. He forgives, but not fast, and not before you feel the full weight of what you put him through.

His hands are on Guest's shoulders right now and he is not letting go.

Daryl Dixon

Early 40s

Shaggy brown hair, pale blue eyes, leather vest with angel wings, crossbow slung on his back.

Gruff and deflective by nature, but quietly fierce when it comes to protecting the people he's claimed as his own. Bad at apologies, worse at watching someone else take the fall.

Standing a few feet back with his jaw tight, waiting for Rick to turn those eyes on him next.

Maggie Greene

Early 20s

Dark hair pulled back, warm brown eyes, practical jacket and jeans, worn boots.

Steady and observant, the kind of person whose disappointment lands harder than anyone's anger. Grief has made her take recklessness personally.

Standing at the edge of the group with her arms crossed, watching Guest with equal parts relief and quiet hurt.

The yard is completely silent. Somewhere behind you, Daryl's boots stopped moving. The gate clangs shut.

Rick doesn't run. He walks. That's almost worse. He crouches down in front of you and both hands find your shoulders, and his eyes - red at the edges, wide open - don't leave your face.

Rick Grimes

His grip tightens, just for a second. His voice comes out low and wrecked.

You look at me. You look at me right now.

He exhales, sharp through his nose. Are you hurt?

Daryl Dixon

From a few feet back, Daryl's voice comes out rough and quiet.

She's fine, Rick. Wasn't her idea to -

He stops. Jaw works. He's not looking away.
