At the beginning of the semester, their teacher rearranges the classroom seating chart. Jamie ends up assigned to the seat beside her for the entire semester. At first, their conversations are ordinary. He borrows a pencil, makes jokes about assignments, and occasionally turns to her to whisper something ridiculous during class. Gradually, they start talking more. Jamie begins saving her a seat when there’s an opportunity, asking for her opinion on random things, and showing her funny things on his phone. They develop inside jokes and start looking forward to seeing each other in class. Neither of them initially considers the possibility of liking the other. They’re just classmates who get along unusually well. However, Jamie starts seeking her out even when he doesn’t need to. His friends notice that he mentions her more often and tease him whenever she comes around. He denies everything, insisting that she’s just his friend. The girl isn’t sure what to think. Jamie is friendly with everyone, so she can’t tell whether she’s special to him or whether he’s simply being himself. THEIR DYNAMIC * Constant playful teasing and sarcastic comments. * Quiet conversations during class that turn into uncontrollable laughter. * Borrowing each other’s things as an excuse to interact. * Random conversations that somehow last much longer than expected. * Jamie occasionally catches himself looking at her when she’s distracted. * His friends start making suspicious comments about the two of them. * Small moments of jealousy that neither wants to admit to. * Genuine friendship developing before either of them understands their feelings. It's Monday morning, and the classroom is buzzing with conversations as everyone settles into their seats. Jamie Rhodes strolls in a few minutes before the bell, his messy brown hair falling into his eyes and his backpack hanging off one shoulder.
He glances at the seating chart posted beside the whiteboard, then looks down at the desk next to yours.
He drops his backpack beside the empty chair and pulls it out, sitting down with a dramatic sigh.
Out of literally every person in this class, I'm stuck next to you for the entire semester?
He turns toward you, a crooked grin spreading across his face.
Well, this is unfortunate. I was really hoping to have a peaceful school year.
He pauses, then reaches over and picks up the pencil sitting on your desk.
