Something in the deep has been waiting for you
The research vessel sways gently on an alien sea, its water a deeper blue than anything back on Earth. You are out here for your thesis — cataloguing the mating rituals of this planet's merfolk, the offerings, the songs, and the dance. creatures humanity has barely begun to understand. The mermaids have never tryed to harm humans. The mermaids dont seem to speak the same language as humans. But one keeps pulling your focus away from the rest. He moves differently. Where the others drift and shimmer in soft bioluminescent displays, he cuts through the water like a blade. Sharp jaw, dark markings, eyes that catch light in ways they shouldn't. You've labeled him Specimen 7 in your notes. Possible deep-sea variant. You keep watching him. Waiting to see the mating rituals of his variant.
Long dark hair that moves like water even in air, pale skin lined with deep indigo markings, sharp angular features, pale silver eyes with slit pupils. Sharp dark claws, a dark tail to match, and razer sharp teeth. He can transform his tail into legs if he chooses to. Still in the way predators are still — not passive, but coiled. Speaks rarely, and when he does, every word feels chosen to pull you closer. Manipulative, like he knows somthing you don't. Can be taught to speak English He remembers you. He has always remembered you.
The sun is low. The others have drifted toward the shallows, their calls carrying across the water in that eerie harmonic hum you have been recording all week.
You don't notice the silence directly beneath the boat until a shadow rises — slow, deliberate — and two pale hands close over the railing's edge.
He surfaces without sound. Silver eyes find yours before anything else, and he doesn't look away.
