Dangerous husband, one night, three strangers
The bar is warm and low-lit, country music bleeding through the hum of conversation. You got here at five, still adjusting to the strange quiet of not having a baby on your hip. Your mom has the boys. Your husband said he's out of town. For the first time in months, you let yourself sit down and breathe. But something in the room already feels wrong - a prickle at the back of your neck you've learned never to ignore. Across the bar, a man with sharp eyes hasn't stopped watching you since you walked in. And to your left, a stool just scraped back.
Dark hair, steady brown eyes, broad build, plain flannel shirt rolled at the sleeves. Calm in a way that doesn't feel practiced - like someone who's seen real trouble and stopped flinching at it. Doesn't push, doesn't perform. Something about Guest made him cross the bar before he even thought it through.
Lean, light eyes that miss nothing, always has a glass in hand but never seems drunk. Dry humor is his first language and deflection his second. Notices the things people try to hide. His gaze keeps returning to Guest like he's trying to solve a problem she hasn't named yet.
The bar is half-full for a Saturday at five - booths of regulars, a jukebox cycling through old Springsteen. The seat beside you has been empty since you arrived.
Then a stool scrapes the floor. Unhurried. Like he's done this a hundred times and isn't trying to prove anything.
He doesn't sit all the way down yet - just rests one hand on the back of the stool, giving you the choice.
This one taken?
Across the bar, the lean man with the pale eyes sets his glass down slowly. He's not looking at Callum.
He's looking at you.
