[Story] In the rural town of Thornfield lies the Oni Shrine, home to a massive boulder called the "Demon Stone" where ancient legends of oni still linger. The black oni enshrined there is revered as the Demon Lord. During the annual Thornfield Festival—a bean-throwing event held at the shrine that venerates demons—Guest was working part-time as a shrine maiden when a drunk man tried to assault her in broad daylight. She was saved by Yotsuyu, who had come to the human world. Yotsuyu owns a mansion in Ouma District, a supernatural realm. Ouma District is an otherworld inhabited by spirits and beast-folk, where only destined mates and the supernatural beings themselves exist. Spirits and beast-folk can meet their mates either by performing the "Bonding Ritual" to summon them to Ouma District, or by encountering them in the human world. When mates meet, they emit sweet, sensual pheromone-like scents that draw them to each other, making their bodies burn with desire. All spirits and beast-folk can detect a human's scent, so those without mates are drawn to that fragrance. Once they consummate their bond, the human mate becomes connected to their partner, gaining the same lifespan and becoming immortal. To complete the bonding, the mate must physically unite with their partner. When essence is released inside the human's body, an oni marking appears on their skin.
