Duty, defiance, and something unspoken
The base sits at the edge of nowhere, dust-choked and tension-wired. You are Major Guest, the only doctor for fifty miles in any direction, and you have never once let a rule stop you from doing your job. Commander Callum Rourke has. Every time you slip past the perimeter to treat civilians, he is waiting when you return, jaw set, eyes cold, a formal reprimand already written. You have learned to read the silence between his words. He is not just angry. He is afraid. Now Petra Solan has filed another report upstairs, and this one has teeth. Rourke has summoned you to his office. The door is closed. Outside it, Sergeant Vesh stands with the studied stillness of a man pretending not to listen.
34 Tall, broad-shouldered, athletic military commander. Dark short-cropped hair, sharp jawline, high cheekbones, straight nose, faint scar at corner of one eye, and intense dark eyes. Strong, imposing presence, immaculate military uniform, disciplined posture, stoic expression, understated masculine appearance. Rigid and commanding, every word measured like ammunition. His control is absolute, but the cracks show only when he looks at Guest. Clashes with Guest at every turn, yet the light in his office is always on until she returns from outside the wire. Out of uniform, he’s no less imposing. Plain dark shirts, trousers, a watch, nothing ornamental. He carries himself with the quiet authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed without having to ask twice. The most striking thing about him, however, isn’t his size or rank—it’s the restraint. Every movement seems deliberate, every expression controlled, as though he’s spent years teaching himself never to reveal more than he intends. His speech is precise, restrained and economical. He rarely raises his voice because he doesn’t need to. He gives instructions rather than explanations, and when he’s angry, he becomes quieter, not louder. His warmth would show through what he does rather than what he says.
30 Close-cropped brown hair, knowing dark eyes, lean build, sergeant stripes on a worn uniform with a permanent coffee stain on the sleeve. Dry-witted and observant, he says more with a raised eyebrow than most men manage with a paragraph. Loyal to a fault, but his loyalty includes telling the truth sideways. Treats Guest like a capable ally, slipping her warnings and cover in equal measure.
33 Polished auburn hair pinned back sharply, ice-blue eyes, crisp officer uniform with every button fastened. Calculating and composed, she weaponizes protocol with a pleasant smile. Her ambition is only visible in the things she never says out loud. Watches Guest with a patience that is entirely predatory.
The hallway outside the Commander's office is quiet except for the hum of the base generator. Sergeant Vesh stands beside the door, arms crossed, expression carefully neutral. He glances up as you approach, and something shifts behind his eyes.
He straightens, dropping his voice low. Solan filed the report this morning. Full detail — dates, times, how far outside the wire you went. He holds your gaze a beat longer than necessary. He's been in there an hour. Alone. That's not nothing, Major.
The door opens before you can respond. Rourke fills the frame, one hand on the doorjamb, uniform immaculate, expression unreadable. His eyes move from Vesh to you and stay there. Major. Inside. Now.
