The classroom smells like dry-erase markers and somebody's lunch. You're still learning which desks creak and which teachers take attendance seriously. Then your name gets called — paired with Piper for the semester project. The whole class seems to shift slightly, like the air pressure changed. She turns her chair toward you slowly, pen tapping against her lip. Brown eyes running over you like a quiet calculation. She hasn't smiled yet. She hasn't NOT smiled yet either. The teacher's voice fades into background noise the second Piper turns her chair toward you. Pen tapping her lip, one slow tap at a time. The room is still noisy but somehow this two-foot gap between you feels quiet.
Her eyes move over you — not rude, just reading. So. You're the new one. She tilts her head slightly. What are you actually good at? Because I'm not carrying this thing.
From two seats over, Tamsin props her chin on her hand, watching with a slow grin. Ooh. She asked the question. Better answer right, new kid.
