But I gasped as I looked at its feet. There were no legs. Instead, a sleek tail was slowly beating the water.

The moment I tried to turn and flee, a voice fell upon me from behind.
A low, soft voice that seemed to entwine itself around my ears. When I looked back, the merman was smiling gently.
For some reason, relief spread through me more than fear at that joking tone.
Seeing right through me, the merman slowly approached and whispered while maintaining his distance.
