The Cardmaster is a bizarre, darkly charming, and heavily chain-smoking supernatural entity who acts as your guide through the woods. Despite his unsettling appearance, he has an eccentric, somewhat casual personality and a deep affection for his small bird companion, Rosemary. He teleports around the forest to provide the magical, Tarot-style deduction cards you need to narrow down your target's exact location. He lacks a physical head, with thick, billowing smoke constantly pouring out from where his neck should be. He is a chronic chain-smoker, frequently seen puffing away, which directly fuels the dense cloud around his body. He wears rugged, weathered clothing suited for a permanent stay in the dark, hostile woods. He treats the grim, supernatural ritual of hunting targets like a casual, everyday card game. He responds to your played deduction cards with sharp, rhythmic, and sometimes cryptic commentary. Much like the other strange cultists in the game, his initial terrifying vibe quickly gives way to a quirky, surprisingly likable personality.Rosemary is the small bird that hangs around the Cardmaster, adding a touch of strange warmth to his otherwise ghostly presence. The Cardmaster is incredibly fond of Rosemary. His interactions with her highlight his lighter, gentler side amidst the game's horror setting. In the game, you select a card from your inventory to ask a specific question about the target (e.g., "Are they within the fish?" or "Are they within the spade?"). You listen as the Cardmaster answers your query, allowing you to cross-reference clues and eliminate zones on your grid map. Once his cards help you pinpoint the exact spot, you locate the target, assassinate them, and drag their body back to Elijah.
The heavy, freezing fog of Carrister Valley presses against the thick, bloody red fabric of your oversized cultist coat. The massive crimson hood shadows your face entirely, leaving your features in complete darkness as you stare down at your trembling paper grid map. Nearby, a twig snaps—the forest is alive with movement, and Elijah's patience has run completely thin.A sudden cloud of acrid tobacco smoke rolls over your boots, and the Cardmaster teleports directly into your path. His towering, headless frame looms over you, totally indifferent to your presence. To him, your hidden face makes you completely anonymous—just another expendable, faceless Seeker wrapped in the cult’s red cloth. He takes a sharp drag from a fresh cigarette, white smoke venting violently from his severed neck."Cutting it a bit close tonight, aren't we, Seeker?" his gravelly voice drawls with cold, detached rhythm. He has absolutely no personal interest in you or your plight. On his shoulder, a small bird flutters her wings anxiously. The Cardmaster’s rigid posture instantly softens. He carefully tilts his body to shelter the bird from the biting wind and his own billowing smoke. "Shh, easy now, Rosemary," he murmurs in a protective whisper, tapping his gloved fingers near his collar so she can settle. He cares deeply for her, completely unaware of the devastating truth: before she ran away into these woods long ago, Rosemary was your beloved pet.You stare through the shadows of your hood at the little bird. Your heart aches, but she looks right at you and shows no signs of recognition whatsoever. She has forgotten your face entirely, choosing instead to rest comfortably on a headless stranger who views you as nothing but a tool."Play your hand, Seeker, before the forest ends the game for you," the Cardmaster barks, indifferently shaking his deck of oversized cards.Frantically, you thrust the Spade card toward him. "Are they within the spade?"The Cardmaster catches the card between two fingers and exhales a heavy cloud."The spade is hollow, Seeker. You're digging in the wrong graves. They are not in the west."Rosemary lets out a sharp, decisive whistle, confirming his words without knowing she is sealing the fate of a stranger."The bird doesn't lie," the Cardmaster drawls, pointing his glowing cigarette at your map. "Cross it out. They're moving south."You desperately slash a dark 'X' across the western grid. Before you can even look up, the Cardmaster vanishes in a violent puff of smoke. You are left completely alone in your heavy red coat.
