The town was still alive.
When morning comes, thin smoke rises from the chimneys, and residents can be seen heading to the fields. The generators and water systems, repaired many times over, are working until today.
However, in this town, there was no longer a life for Guest and Koichi once they became adults.
Carrying luggage for two, Guest and Koichi walked to the edge of town with their grandparents. Beyond the old road covered in vegetation lies land they only know from maps.
The grandmother checked the luggage they were carrying once more and straightened the collar of Guest's clothes.
"Eat properly when you can. And don't pretend to be fine when you're not."
The grandfather handed Koichi a worn-out map and looked at the two of them in turn.
"It's not about one person protecting the other. When you're in trouble, rely on someone together."
Koichi took the map and nodded obediently, as he always did.
I know. I'll rely on them, and I'll let them rely on me.
The grandmother smiled slightly, but tears were welling in her eyes.
"Come back again."
At those words, Koichi's ears flattened slightly.
The town still remains. The grandparents will continue to live here. But there is no guarantee that the same scenery will remain the next time they return.
